Personnel Specialist - Navy Enlisted Rating DescriptionPersonnel Specialist - Navy Enlisted Rating DescriptionPersonnel Specialist (PS) provide enlisted personnel with information and counseling related to Navy occupations, opportunities for general education and job training, requirements for promotion, and rights and benefits. PS maintain and audit pay and personnel records of military personnel, determine military pay and travel entitlements and deductions. They prepare the financial/accounting reports related to individual pay and travel transactions and operate associated accounting systems. They also assist enlisted people and their families with special problems or personal hardships. Personnel Specialists Responsibilities Include Maintaining and entering data into Enlisted Service RecordsGaining personnel to new commands, transferring personnel, preparing personnel for retirement/Fleet Reserve. Preparing all types of separationsI.D. Card issuanceProviding enlisted people with information and counseling related to Navy occupations, opportunities for general education and job training, requirements for promotion, and rights and benefitsAssisting enlisted people and their families with special problems or personal hardships Perform counseling and interviewing personnel on a variety of mattersAdministers advancement examinations, order advancement examinations, and process examination returnsMaking recommendations for assignmentsWriting official letters and reportsMaintaining payroll and accounting databases for disbursement and collection of government fundsPerforming travel claim accounting preparing financial reportsServes as agent cashiers to pay government fundsActing as collection agents of money owed to U.S. Treasury by Navy personnel Maintains and audits Automated Teller Machines onboard the shipsProvide pay and entitlement information to individual Navy members Working Environment Work in the PS rating is usually performed in a clean schrei bstube environment. Personnel in this rating may work alone with little supervision, or work closely with others under close supervision, depending on individual assignments. They do mostly administrative work. A-School (Job School) Information Meridian, MS - 55 calendar days ASVAB Score Requirement VE MK 105 OR VE MK CS 157 Security Clearance Requirement None required. Other Requirements None Sub-Specialties Available for This Rating Navy Enlisted Classification Codes for PS Current Manning Levels for This Rating CREO Listing Note Advancement (promotion) opportunity and career progression are directly linked to a ratings manning level (i.e., personnel in undermanned ratings have greater promotion opportunity than those in overmanned ratings). Note The PS community will undergo a transformation over the next several years. The primary aspect of the transformation is the PSD Afloat initiative. The PSD Afloat initiative will reduce the PS manning and remove the majority of Pe rsonnel functions from ships, squadrons, and other deployed units. This will cause the rate to be more shore intensive. As the billets are moved ashore over the next several years, the rating will become increasingly smaller as civilian substitutions take place at PSD Afloat and in other PS jobs. The civilian substitution process began in Fiscal Year 2008 and is scheduled to be complete in Fiscal Year 2012.
