After the Application How to Increase Your Chances of Getting Hired [FB LIVE] Hey ladies! During the past month, I’ve answering your questions on making career transitions and discovering what your dream career is. Every Tuesday, I’ve been on Facebook live to answer one of your questions. Today our topic is all about how to increase your chances of getting hired. Were talking about after the application. This comes from a question submitted by one of our CCG Network Facebook group, Erin Ford. She asked: What are steps I can take after applying to a job online? Whether its via a job board or the companys website, what are ways in which I can increase my chances of having my application seen/considered? Great question! Firstly, I want you to remember that people are extremely busy. I know this first hand because people are applying to work even at our company and sometimes I can get too busy to even respond. One of our interns, Raven, applied for a position at CCG and had she not followed up I might not have hired her. We had talked on the phone and she submitted her application when we werent as busy. All of the sudden, our business got super swamped for about two to three weeks and I literally could not focus on anything else. I was not going to hire anyone when our business was super so swamped. Every week she continued to follow up with me and send me an email and check in. I noticed her in our Facebook group and following us on social media, too! Every time I saw her name pop up, it was another bell of, She really wants this job, I need to get back to her. Im super swamped right now, but when things calm down a bit Im going to reach back out to her and hire her. I hope you see how following up can increase your chances of being hired. Along with that, I want to share 4 tips with you that can increase your chances of being hired tenfold. After the Application: How to Increase Your Chances of Getting Hired 1. Follow Up! One of the first ways to increase your chances of getting hired is to follow up! People are busy and you want to make sure that they dont forget about you. A member of our CCG Network, Ashley Nicole Hammond, actually shared a story about what happened after she submitted her application: I submitted an application online and the company I applied for said that my application/interest was received and that if my qualities matched what they were looking for that within two weeks they would be in contact with me. A week went by and I didnt hear anything, so I called to follow up and got an interview this way and interviewed the same week and landed a second interview for the same position right after. This helped me. Most importantly, dont just sit back and relax and think you can get the job. Take the initiative to follow up because it shows your passion and excitement. You want them to know that you really want this job. Thats how I hired Raven. She didnt just give up when I didnt get back to her. She was always on social media following up, and I knew she was really passionate about the job. Thats what employers are looking for when they hire people. 2. Find The Recruiter or Hiring Manager on LinkedIn I would highly recommend doing your homework and research and finding the companys hiring manager on social media. LinkedIn is probably your best choice, but it could even be over Twitter. Find the person thats in charge: maybe a name of the person you applied to, the head of the company, whoever! Find them and message them. Tell them you applied and that you really want to work there. Tell them why youre qualified, and that you would love to tell them more in an interview. Give them your phone number and your availability. What you need to know is that employers want people who are excited, passionate and determined to make it happen and make things work. If youre showing up in all these different places online, the company is definitely going to notice you. Even if theres a stack of candidates piled high, if you come through on LinkedIn and send a personal message showing your passion, they will move you ahead of the line because you stood out in a different way. [RELATED: How To Create a Personal Brand That Moves Your Career Forward] 3. Get a Referral Via LinkedIn If youve done the first two strategies already, awesome! Move on to meeting other people who work there. Connect with anyone who works at the company you applied to on LinkedIn. Try going to a networking event where you know employees of that company are at, or find them via LinkedIn groups and message them. You might be able to get a referral in now that youve submitted your application. If someone else at the company you applied for goes to HR and says, Hey, I know this person, theyre great, thumbs up! theyre definitely gonna move you ahead of the line. An in-house referral can be crucial to getting that job. 4. Use Social Media to Your Advantage Lets say I just applied at Nike. I can go to Nikes Facebook page and write a comment or on their wall and say Hey, I just applied to your company. Im so excited to work for you guys! Cant wait to hear back! Show your passion through social media. Wherever you decide to reach out to them, make sure its a really good profile and youre able to demonstrate your skills and experiences on there. For example, when sending a dm on Instagram, make sure your Instagram looks amazing when they come check it out after getting your DM. Find their company page on LinkedIn and message them or comment on their profile. Go to Twitter and DM hiring managers, company managers, or the company itself. Tell them you applied and youre excited. There are so many things you can do on social media to your advantage! Remember my intern? She showed up everywhere! I saw her over and over again! Even though I was super busy and swamped with work, I saw her comment on all our social media profiles and help other people in our Facebook group. I saw her in all of these different places. Yes, there are other people checking the accounts, and social media managers are the ones getting  the DM, but you just never know. They may tell HR. You may stand out enough that they contact the hiring manager and tell them they need this person on a team because theyre going above and beyond the typical application process. Thats really what you wanna do. Overall, if you take away anything, notice that all of these strategies have to do with networking. Usually, the first result is “Free Resume Advice” and there is no such thing as “free” on the Internet. There is always some sort of catch. The last search result would take an hour to find after sifting through all the pages.The advice is usually generalized for creating a resume, offers templates, and leaves out mention of the fact that one resume does not work for all jobs.4. 4 Steps to Perfect Online Content - Classy Career Girl

4 Steps to Perfect Online Content Many women today are balancing jobs, children, home and even additional courses to enhance their skills. You are probably one of these women, right? Saving time is essential but sacrificing quality isn’t! The bottom line is  if you want to have perfect online content when you are putting together your next blog post, webinar, online training or PowerPoint slides then I want you to keep reading. I have just four easy steps to share with you about capturing your reader’s attention and creating an exciting visual stimulus to captivate your co-workers (or students!). 4 Steps to Perfect Online Content I’m a bit of a geek in that I love to use brain science and learning research to discover how adults read and learn. Our attention spans are getting shorter. It used to be that an 8-minute training video was considered optimal time to be consumed without the viewer losing interest. Now, that amount of time has been reduced to between 2 and 3 minutes. Hmmm. I want you to be able to create effective and interesting online content for your business with ease. Now about that perfect content: right away, you can capture your reader with curiosity. Have you seen the image above? Are you thinking maybe the resolution is too poor for your screen? Guess again. I just used the first step. #1. Curiosity Are you still with me? Good. I hope I appealed to your natural curiosity. Here’s the same picture again focused: #2. Conflict Another attention grabber is to use a phrase or photograph that is really out of context. This makes the learner have to pay attention because what they see is not what they hear! Just like this stop sign below. It grabs your attention, doesnt it? #3: Engage You can also engage your online readers with something like this photo of the children being active  with using hands-on activity (like getting them to email you  something: a  comment, information, or an answer to your questions right away). The more active they are the more the chances are of them completing your content that you worked so hard to create. Using Google Docs for training is great for this because comments and collaboration can be done in real time. #4: Variety And of course: #4. Variety is the spice of life. There are a lot of free resources available to you if your office doesn’t provide them. For instance, to help edit images I love Canva (canva.com). I also love the picture tools in PowerPoint. It has a lot of great options that are easy to use. I used the artistic effects tool to blur the image above. Another tip  is to not use page after page of text. Add some variety with shorter chunks of text, bullet points or text boxes to highlight important details. Always use more than written materials. Find out how to add images, video or other multimedia to your online content. One last point (and this is especially true for adults), you always want to provide ideas to make your material immediately applicable to them. Add in some practical (or visual) tips like I have done here. Your participants will immediately start thinking of ways to use what you shared with them and they will want to learn more. Where to Find the Fastest Growing Careers Many of my clients are working through a career transition. They are moving from one career path to another. Once they are in the decision-making process of determining what career is the best fit, they oftentimes ask the questions: What are some of the fastest growing careers? What occupations seem like they are in higher demand? Geography versus job role One determining factor in your career decision-making process, may be which career path is in high demand currently and/or will continue to grow in years to come. Another consideration is whether the career is in high demand in the area where you want to live. For some, residing in a particular location is more important than the career path. For others, they would be willing to move to an area of the country where their particular career is in demand. This information begs the question: How can I find the fastest growing careers? Dont just google it Naturally, you could use a search engine to find “fastest growing careers.” This search may or may not provide you with the information you seek. Instead, I would suggest starting your search by reviewing a career repository site like O*Net Online (http://www.onetonline.org/). O*Net Online has a tremendous amount of data on careers. In particular, the career paths designated “Bright Outlook Occupations”. These occupations with the Bright Outlook Occupation designation are either projected to grow faster than average, projected to have 100,000+ job openings in the next ten years, or are new occupations in a high growth industry. You may find it helpful to see if the new career path they are considering fits into a Bright Outlook Occupation. Otherwise, consider using information from this helpful resource in your decision-making process.

What It Really Takes To Be Inspiring (and Inspired) Courtesy of FreeDigitalPhotos.net For some time, I’ve been following inspiring women leaders, entrepreneurs, business movers-and- shakers, writers and others on the cutting edge of thought leadership, and I’m still awed and amazed at how much there is out in the world to be inspired by. In my line of work as a women’s career coach, executive trainer and writer, I’m fortunate to connect with women like Whitney Johnson and Judy Robinett who invest deeply in ideas, business and people and help their dreams become reality.     And with women like Janet Hanson and Claudia Chan who have a calling to spotlight other women’s growth and promote women’s success like a powerful brand.   And Tory Johnson who, after a brutal firing years ago, found her calling to become a powerful and empowered voice for working women in America.   And Brené Brown, whose TED talk on shame and vulnerability rocked the world and continues to make waves of important contribution.   The list goes on and on. But years ago, I remember being rendered speechless when someone asked me, “Who’s your role model?   Who inspires you?” The sad truth is that, at that time, the answer was “No one.”   I was so out of touch with what I authentically cared about in the world, and felt so alone, despairing and isolated (because I truly hated my corporate work, and myself in it, and just couldn’t figure a way out of it), that having a role model or connecting with women who inspired me was the farthest thing from my mind. What snapped me out of this isolation and disconnection was my own brutal layoff after 9/11, and my decision then to stop playing the victim, take control, and reclaim my passion, power and purpose in life and work. Figuring out what I wanted to be and do in the world, and mustering the courage and commitment to pursue that was what it took for me to reconnect to the land of the living and find true role models â€" women who were ten steps ahead of me doing what I longed to do. In the past year of writing my ForbesWoman blog and contributing to Huffington Post, AARP Work Reimagined and other organizations, I’ve observed some common traits of inspiring people who are achieving amazing success, making a difference, contributing positively to our culture, and supporting women’s growth.   In fact, I’ve found that there are 13 core traits of highly successful and inspiring women (see my Amazing Career Project for my video #2 about these 13 traits).   But three traits continue to rise to the top of this list. Bar none, the following are the top three traits you’ll see in people who inspire, enliven, empower and uplift us. The three core behaviors or traits of deeply inspiring people: 1)           They have forged their own authentic path taken a hard, unpaved road that goes against the grain and demanded a tremendous show of guts, strength, commitment, and perseverance In other words, these people have taken a brave, new direction and are living full-out what they talk about, study and research.   They are the true embodiment of courage and fortitude in the face of opposition, criticism, judgment, and what sometimes seem to be unbeatable odds.   They don’t just talk about what they’re fascinated by â€" they’re immersed in it and exude it, body and soul. 2)           They are supremely   “other-focused”  â€" they derive an enormous sense of satisfaction and reward â€" and spend most of their professional time and energy helping other people, or organizations and enterprises, grow and flourish These individuals aren’t just talking about what they’ve done â€" they’re focused on turning their “mess” into a “message” or helping others succeed and overcome the deep challenges out there in the way of greater success, fulfillment, peace, contribution, and progress. 3)           They are riveting storytellers â€" These inspiring leaders and ground-breakers spend their time sharing and revealing something very different from the same old platitudes and principles we’ve heard over and over.   From their individual set of traumas, experiences, longings, failures, triumphs, and histories, they have a unique way of looking at the world, and they share their special vision through powerful stories that pluck at our heartstrings and stimulate our thinking and our emotions in ways that literally no one else can. *   *   *   *   *   *   * I’m happy to say that I am now inspired all the time by men and women who are 100 steps ahead of me, doing what I long to, in the way I long to do it, with authenticity, clarity, grace and power.   All I have to do is watch one new TED Talk or interview someone making significant positive change, and I’m thinking again of what’s possible. There are so many people in the world who can serve as your role models and help you make the huge impact in the world that you want to, that I’d say this If you can’t find someone to inspire you, it’s time for an internal shift to heal the disconnection and isolation you feel, and get yourself back in the game of life. After all, we believe what we see.   To be inspired by another is to be reminded that what stirs us so deeply about someone else is, in fact, possible within ourselves.
